SLIT Therapy for Seasonal & Environmental Allergies
Seasonal allergies are right around the corner and the Root of Health is offering a new therapy option for patients to treat and potentially cure themselves of a variety of environmental allergies. Sublingual immunotherapy, also known as SLIT, is an individualized allergy therapy customized to your specific allergens. Allergy testing can be performed either in our office or with you allergy specialist to determine what your specific allergens are. Based on the results of you testing we are able to send that information to the lab who is then able to customize a bottle of those specific allergens to be used in your treatment. For seasonal allergies it is recommended to start treatment 30-60 days before the exposure time starts and then to carry it through until the end of that season. Patients will generally experience an improvement in symptoms during the initial treatment but if treatment is repeated annually within 2-5 years patients can be completely symptom free.
How Does it Work?
For house hold allergens such as dust mites or pet dander therapy can continue year round until a patient is symptom free.
Patients take 1 drop of their customized formula under their tongue daily during the treatment period. Research shows that sublingual exposure to the allergens allows the body to tolerate the allergen with the result being more mild reactions when a patient is exposed.
SLIT versus Allergy Shots
The concept behind both of these therapies is very similar as is the effectiveness based on the research. As SLIT is an oral therapy it can be administered by patients at home rather than in a doctor’s office on a weekly basis. This tends to improve both short and long term compliance as well making it a great option for children or patients with a fear of needles.
If you suffer from environmental or household allergies SLIT may be a great treatment option for you. If you would like to discuss allergy testing or have any questions please call the clinic to book a free 15 minute consultation with one of our Naturopathic doctors.
