Gratitude, I was always taught by my Sensei in Japan, is one of the highest forces in the universe, along with the vibrational energy of Love. In our busy lives, we too often focus on the things that are going wrong in our lives, or in our bodies, that need fixing. Instead we should foster feelings of love and gratitude; nurturing these positive emotions will have many beneficial effects on both our health and happiness. I find myself truly grateful every day for so many things!

From a remarkable study by Dr. Robert Emmons of the University of California, “In an experimental comparison, those who kept gratitude journals on a weekly basis exercised more regularly, reported fewer physical symptoms, felt better about their lives as a whole, and were more optimistic about the upcoming week compared to those who recorded hassles or neutral life events (Emmons & McCullough, 2003).”

Try upon waking in the morning to begin your day by expressing each and every thing you are grateful for as you shower and get ready for your day. Perhaps on the first day you will find it a challenge to find things to be grateful for, but with a little practice you may find that you are on your way to the kitchen to have breakfast, and you are not done yet! We have so much to be grateful for, and so much in this life that we take for granted. Being able to truly feel thankful has a powerful impact on our health and well-being.

On the topic of well-being, our physical bodies are something that we often forget to feel grateful for. However, this beautiful vessel for our mind and spirit, carries us through so many experiences and without it, where would we be? Even if the body is ailing in some way, saying “Thank-You” to our bodies daily is an important practice.
